Project: Construction Pathways
On behalf of the Construction, Plumbing and Services IRC, Artibus Innovation has reviewed and developed the following training package components:
- 3 qualifications:
- CPC10111 Certificate I in Construction
- CPC20112 Certificate II in Construction
- CPC20211 Certificate II in Construction Pathways
Thankyou to everyone who has provided input into this project. The Case for Endorsement will be considered by the Australian Industry Skills Committee at their meeting on February 25th. A project update will be released upon receipt of the official Communique from that meeting.
Certificate I and II construction qualifications provide an opportunity for learners to develop skills and experiences in a range of construction skills.
Certificate I in Construction provides an introduction to construction industry job roles and expectations and the use of basic tools and materials and is suitable for VET in schools programs and for other learners seeking an introduction to construction work skills.
Certificate II in Construction Pathways provides an introduction to traditional trade qualifications such as carpentry, bricklaying and plastering and can be a stepping-stone into Certificate III training in these trades. While the Certificate II in Construction can also play a transitional role, it is often used as an endpoint qualification in general construction skills, for example, for those seeking general skills as a builders labourer.
Unit overlap with trade qualifications reduced
The current Certificate II in Construction Pathways includes many units that are also part of Certificate III qualifications.
The consensus of industry advice we have received is that while some duplication of units is beneficial in supporting pathways into trade qualifications, the current level of duplication is excessive for a qualification at this AQF level. Consequently, we have reduced the number of units from Cert III qualifications used in the core of the proposed qualification and have tightened the rules on the packaging of electives.
New units added
Two new units, CPCCCM1017 Prepare simple construction sketches and CPCCCM2013 Undertake basic installation of wall tiles, have been developed.
Remote area stream added
The IRC has identified opportunities for the Certificate II in Construction Pathways to better meet community needs in remote areas of Australia, including in isolated indigenous communities.
The proposed qualification includes a remote area building stream consisting of the same core units as the general stream, but with a choice of electives to better meet community and industry needs in these areas.
Work safely unit
CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry has been added as a core unit.
